Subtle and insinuating.There s a point, late in this collection of essays, when Sukrungruang quotes Tobias Wolff, and the reader can only nod in recognition Because what Sukrungruang is doing with his essays is what Wolff does in the best of his short stories, interweaving, interlacing, building through interlocking details until a final moment of recognition that is so dense it could not be understood without what came before.While Sukrungruang s first memoir billed as a memoir was often too st [...]

First of all, I like Ira as a person Second of all, I like that his essays seem to have helped me break through a writer s block Everyone should read this book His is quite the unique story, and just between you and me and the fencepost, I think creative nonfiction is a refreshing change from my usual dense historical novels.

After reading one of Ira s essays in the Shambhala Sun magazine, I decided to buy the book At the start I was a little disappointed I didn t find the essays to carry a certain weight or depth that I thought they might based on the single essay, Southside Buddhist, from which the book is named, or vice versa, who knows in the magazine I cannot say that it was a page turner however, I can say that while turning the pages I learned something about myself Though I have an appreciation for the person [...]
