    The Whispering City Comment

    1. This is a really fascinating mystery that takes place in 1952 Barcelona, which is my favorite city I ve ever been to This period it time though was one I wasn t familiar with, and is actually a bit frightening A corrupt government that practically owns the press adds a tense undercurrent to a really interesting mystery Love the setting, really interesting lady protagonist, definitely recommend especially if you ve been to Spain

    2. This historical mystery takes place in a repressive Barcelona It is 1952 and Franco s regime rules by means of terror and fear Ana Marti is a young journalist, who chafes at having to write stories on the society parties and fashions of the day Now, one of the socialites she reported on has been murdered Mariona Sobrerroca, widow of a well known doctor, has been discovered in her husband s office pale, blonde, voluptuous and dead With the normal crime writer away, Ana gets her chance to do some [...]

    3. Highly acclaimed in Spain, this is a cracking thriller set in a believable 1950s Barcelona that builds the tension to a brilliant climax. It is post Civil War Spain and in 1950 s oppressive and very fascist Barcelona Ana Mart Noguer, a keen young female journalist, is surprised to be assigned to work with the Police when wealthy socialite Mariona Sobrerroca is found murdered. The story expands from a straight forward murder to an intriguing puzzle the leads to the city s corrupt and ruthless power [...]

    5. General Franco was at the height of his power in Barcelona, 1952 When a wealthy socialite is found murdered in her mansion, the police scramble to seize control of the investigation An over eager journalist named Ana Mart Noguer is assigned the task of shadowing the lead investigator, Inspector Isidro Castro However, Ana discovers a bunch of letters that dramatically contradict the official statement made by the police Now she is in mortal danger her information can expose a conspiracy of murder [...]

    7. I received this free from the publishers via NetGalleyIt s 1952, and one of Barcelona s wealthy socialite, Mariona Sobrerroca, is found murdered in her home The facist government is at it s height and the police struggle to get control of the case Ana Marti Noguer is a young journalist who jumps at the chance to cover the story She soon gets involved too deep in the case and soon her own life is put in danger. As many of you already know, adult fiction is usually a hit or miss for me, but The Whi [...]

    8. Barcelona 1952 Franco has been in power since 1939 His dictatorship has muted to an authoritarian regime still repressive, still scary Watching over a shoulder is still the national pastime Who is loyal to whom, and whose secret you didn t want to know will cost you a final trip to the top of a wall Perfect noir set The title is ideal The frumpy cop with a voice like steeled velvet, who may enjoy inflicting pain too much, has children at home he loves and worries over A harried newspaper editor [...]

    9. When I read the synopsis saying this mystery story takes place in 1950s Barcelona I was hoping for something like The Shadow of the Wind That hope lead to my disappointment This was an intriguing story, and could be made into a brilliant movie But the writing lacked something that would make it a brilliant read It felt flat, forced, and sometimes lifeless And the ending was far too rushed.

    10. Novel set in 1950s BARCELONAThis review first appeared on our blog where we also visit a bookish restaurant Flamant in the city tripfiction crime mystI recently visited Barcelona and took The Whispering City by Sara Moliner with me, set firmly in the city of 1952 Rather intriguingly I was staying in one of the streets mentioned in the book the Rambla de Catalunya and as I set off each day to explore, I would look up the patrician houses and apartments and imagine some of the characters from the [...]

    12. Ana Mart , society correspondent for La Vanguardia, is delighted when her editor assigns her to her first serious crime story Reluctantly, the police allow her to shadow their investigation into the murder of wealthy widow, Mariona Sobrerroca But this is 1952 and, under Franco s fascist dictatorship, police brutality is rife and the press heavily censored When Ana discovers some letters suggesting that the murder isn t the relatively straightforward result of an interrupted burglary, she submits [...]

    13. An unusual murder mystery set in early 1950 s Spain, which was then ruled by the Fascist dictator Franco A young journalist, Ana and her cousin Beatriz, who s described as a walking encyclopedia of classical literature investigate the death of a wealthy socialite in Barcelona Ana is allowed to follow the police investigation led by Inspector Isidro Castro and discovers a cache of romantic letters which she gives to Beatriz who works out the hidden meaning behind them Their discovery implicates t [...]

    15. Plot wise and character wise, it is definitely a tree star novel, but historical fiction is also appreciated for its attention to detail and the reproduction of a certain age, manners, zeitgeist, and this novel is a good example of historical fiction and research, plus some citations, linguistic investigation and analysis, so four stars, even though it is definitely a stretch Three and a half

    16. The book took a while to get into, and at first some of the characters were hard to keep straight, but once I committed myself to it, I enjoyed it The background of Barcelona in the 1950s was so interesting, and the mystery as it unraveled definitely kept me hooked The characters of Ana, Beatriz, and Castro were all very interesting The ending did feel a bit rushed, however.

    17. I thought it was about languages and how detectives used language to solve cases but that turned out to be a small aspect of the book It s really a murder mystery thriller like any other, so kind of disappointed I did learn a lot about Barcelona in the fifties however, now I can chat with some grandpas and share in their stories.

    18. I ve read now a couple of mysteries set during the Franco regime of Spain This particular story is in Barcelona in 1952 which, of course, is why I read it, since I have little idea of what Barcelona was like in 1952 I have little idea of Barcelona in 2016, for that matter If corruption is an important feature in mysteries, this regime was essentially corrupt from top to bottom Well told The outcome full of doubt to the last page, the story is plausible, which makes it scary, and informative, whi [...]

    19. Excellent who dunnit which provides an interesting insight into Franco run Spain and the political machinations mixed with Barcelona high society as well as what it was like to be on the wrong side of the regime The lead Inspector Isidro Castro is a perfect amalgam of being an ideal servant of the dictatorship using physical violence when he doesn t receive answers to his liking but also has a softer understanding side to his nature The two principal female characters Ana and Beatriz are also w [...]

    20. This is definitely a very thrilling and exciting novel that it s hard for me to put down this book There s one thing that doesn t feel quite right for me that is, I feel the end of the story was a little too rushed It would have been better, for me, if all the crimes that Fernando have done were exposed to the public instead of just getting killed by you know who Overall, this is a really splendid story with interesting characters.

    21. I wish I could have read this book in either Catalan or Spanish as there were a number of things that got lost in translation Nonetheless the book was quite enjoyable and kept me engaged until the very last page.

    23. I don t think I ve read anything by Sara Moliner before picking up an audiobook edition of The Whispering City, translated into English from the author s native tongue If I try another title by this author it will be a while. The story takes place in Barcelona, Spain during 1952 when General Franco s fascist government was in full swing A young journalist is directed to cover the police investigation of the murder of a wealthy socialite The journalist runs into the wall of press controls imposed [...]

    24. This is a knockout debut Ana Marti is a courageous journalist in Franco s Spain, where courage in women is not admired She and her cousin Beatriz, a scholar, find themselves on the trail of a killer in a very high stakes political game It all ended up a bit too neatly, but a very enjoyable read Recommended.
